Recently, the Columbia College Jazz Studies program has chartered a chapter of IAJE as a means of increasing the student involvement in jazz-related campus activities. IAJE, which stands for the International Association of Jazz Educators, is a professional organization known across the world for promoting jazz education. IAJE is perhaps know best for its annual IAJE Conference which is held in various cities nationally as well as internationally.
The last conference was held on January 11, 2008 in Montreal, Canada. IAJE's conference is centered on jazz education but also directs a lot of attention towards honoring NEA (National Education Association) Jazz Masters. Honored this year were NEA chairman Dana Gioia along with: Gunther Schuller, Paquito D'Rivera, David Baker, Nancy Wilson, Quincy Jones, Frank Foster, Candido Camero, and a host of others. It is important to recognize our jazz greats but it is equally important that students engage in the promotion of the highest standards of music and jazz appreciation throughout our varying communities.
IAJE at Columbia needs the help of the Columbia student body in order to insure the mutual development of educational and performance standards in jazz as well as the many genres influenced by jazz. The current chapter President, Alex Marianyi and Vice President Tim Ipsen are highly active as representatives of the jazz studies program. The newly established Columbia organization has already opened up its arms for new members... and it's not too late to get involved!
